Group of four war-date Confederate officer’s Autograph Letters Signed by Captain George Bouton, two with covers, penned between August 7 and September 18, 1861, reads in part: “...[8/7/61] a detachment has been sent in the neighborhood of Newport News, for military purposes & it is possible there may be a fight there in a day or two. Mr. Thorton is with them, I know not at what hour we may be ordered off. We are holding ourselves in readiness...[8/16/61]Oh that this war was at an end so that I could be at home to see you and to be with you...Many of the company are sick...Thomas Burroughs was a little sick...his tongue is very much coated as those who are now sick was attacked, he complains of pain in his limbs & weakness...[9/8/61] The most of our men are bare of clothes & will in a short time begin to suffer and where they are to get clothes from I know not, I ordered a uniform coat when in Culpeper, it was forwarded by express about the 10 of last month but has never reached me...” Fine condition.
