Pair of war-date Autograph Letters Signed one by Captain George Bouton, and one to him from his wife. Captain Boston’s letter is 2pp. quarto, dateline November 7, 1861, and reads in part: “...Dr. Robertson who attends our company received a letter from his wife this morning (in Petersburg) that his son was ill & could not live 24 hours, he applied to the authorities for leave of Absence. Dr. Pace agreeing to attend to his patients for him but they refused and the poor fellow has to stay here within a days ride of home and unable to go, volunteer soldiers have to endure many privations & forego much of their former liberty. All is quite here at present & likely to remain so. The late news from the fleet down South is not calculated to make the Lincoln government feel pleasant, in a military spirit all is buoyant at present. The health of our camp has much improved, Mr. Colvin the man that was so sick has much improved...I received an electioneering letter from Mr. Jeremiah Morton today too late for the vote, but we gave our vote for him yesterday. I would prefer a greater statesman for our representative if we had him but, we have fallen on evil times, I have but little confidence in the Confederate Constitution, it will too much an ape of the old one...” Fine condition.
