A great postwar scrap book owned by Major Marcellus Newton Moorman (1835-1904) who enlisted in April 1861 as a captain in the Virginia Lynchburg Light Artillery. His battery was present during the historic battle of Hampton Roads between the USS Monitor and CSS Merrimac. Included in this scrap book is a great pencil sketch showing the coastal defenses of Hampton Roads drawn ca. March 1862…PLUS; A war-date ink sketch showing a view of the Merrimac cruising in a river drawn from above and initialed "M. N. M."…PLUS; a great war-date Confederate printed handbill poem, entitled: "THE BATTLE OF SEWALL'S POINT, by Harry C. Treakle, of Norfolk." In part: "Old Abe and his horde are trying very hard…we'll send 'em to the Happy Land of Cannan…you'd better b'lieve the boys are a train'…the Monticello ship, tried to get us on the hip…but the boys stood their ground, and gave 'em round for round…"…PLUS; many war-date and postwar newspaper clippings several of the poem "Stonewall Jackson's Way" and an ca. April 1861 roster of the Beauregard Rifles listing Moorman as captain. More. VG
