War-date partly-printed Document Signed, "John G. Walker" Lieutenant Colonel 1st Texas Rangers, 1pp. quarto, January 14, 1862, Camp Terry, Kentucky, being a soldier's discharge for "...C.W. McGehee a Private of Captain S.C. Ferrill's Company D, 1st Regiment of Texas Rangers...is hereby honorably discharged from the Army of the Confederate States..." About VG. McGehee served with the 1st Texas as well as the 36th Texas Infantry. The 8th Texas Cavalry, usually called Terry's Texas Rangers, organized with 1,170 men at Houston in the Fall of 1861. Considered one of the hardest fighting units of the war, they fought at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Chickamauga. Later it was active in the Knoxville and Atlanta Campaigns, the defense of Savannah, and the campaign of the Carolinas.
