Very rare war-date Confederate States of American pass issued by the “Salt Commissioner’s Office” Wilmington, North Carolina, July 16, 1863, and reads “THIS IS TO CERTIFY, That Mr. Edmon Longworth is a hand regularly detailed for service at the State Salt Works...” Signed by J.M Worth Commissioner, and Robert Morrison Superintendent. Docketed on verso “Good while so employed Jany 23/64 D. G. Worth” and “Grant passport for two months H.B. Willis Lt. & Asst C.O. Jan. 23, 1864” . As salt was one of the most important raw materials produced in the South because of its use in preserving food, the men employed at the salt works were exempt from active service in the Confederate Army.
