War-date Autograph Letter Signed, "Jones S. Hamilton" Adjutant General, 1p. quarto, March 16, 1862, being a letter press copy on onion skin addressed to Colonel and later Brigadier General Mark Perrin Lowrey (1828-1885) one of the brigade commanders of Cleburne's celebrated division, who was made Colonel of the 32nd Mississippi, after this letter. The letter reads in part: "...The Governor takes pleasure in assuring you that throughout the entire limits of the state the gallant sons of Mississippi are seen hurrying to arms, and should twice seven thousand men have been called for the number could have been easily raised. Your companies must all be returned to this Department. A muster roll of the names & no of men in each & a certificate of Election of Commissioned officers by the managers of such election. All commissions to company & field officers issued from this Department only staff & appointed officers received commissions from the Confederate States. Your regiment will be numbered & your marching orders issued & transportation given from this Department. Companies reporting here will in no way interfere with your securing them for your Regiment..." VG.
