A good Confederate general's signature: "Francis T. Nicholls"(1834-1912), clipped from a larger governor of Louisiana document with partial state seal visible. Nicholls first served at lieutenant colonel of the 8th Louisiana and fought at First Bull Run and Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Valley campaign. He was wounded and captured at Winchester and had his foot torn off by a shell at Chancellorsville. He finished the war as a brigadier general and was elected several times as governor of Louisiana. VG.
