War-date Confederate Document Signed by Captain Walter K. Martin of General W.E. Jones’ staff, 2pp. folio, Head Quarters Valley District, March 29, 1863, being General Order No. 16, and reads in part: “...A general court martial will assemble at or near these Head Quarters at 10 oclock am the 31st inst or as soon thereafore as practicable, for the trial of Asst. Surgeon John B. Worthan PACS and such other prisoners as may be brought before it.” Followed by list of officers appointed to the court martial and states that “1st Lieut James S. Worthan (b. 1840) was commissioned assistant surgeon of the 2nd Maryland Artillery on June 9, 1862. On February 25, 1863, Asst. Surgeon Worthan was ordered to proceed to Fredericksburg and report to General JEB Stuart for trial before court martial. He was later restored and continued to serve the Baltimore Light Artillery.
