War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by D.J. Wardlaw, 14th South Carolina Infantry, 3pp. quarto, Camp near Guir’s Station, December 12, 1863, and reads in part: “...I have fully concluded to have a substitute if I can get one. Morrow’s substitute tells me of one Jasper Jones that wants to come to the army badly. I would like for you or Morrow one to go to Lowensville and see him & if he wants to come send him by Lieutenant [James M.] Truit on the first chance you can go as high as 15 hundred dollars but as much less as you can get him, make the terms as easy as possible...I thought there would be a chance to have my furlow extended or a discharge but when I got to Richmond I concluded that I would not make the effort for the present for fear in the future my chances might be better. I am under every obligation to you & Capt. [MC] Taggart for I know you done all that was in your powers both of you....” More. Very good condition. The 14th South Carolina fought under AP Hill in the Army of Northern Virginia, and were engaged at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness.
