Another great war-date official Confederate Indian Bureau document, 4pp. 4to., [n. p., n. d., but Richmond, Va., ca. July 1864] entitled: "Estimate of appropriations required to comply with Treaty stipulations entered into between the Confederate States and Certain Indian Tribes", under Articles 38, 39, 41, 45 and 53 and these tribes include the Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Osage, and Seminoles. Between July and October 1861, the Confederate States entered into separate treaties with each of these tribes (the Choctaw and Chickasaw being part of the same treaty) which required the Confederate government to pay specified annuities, interest, including, in part: "Creek Treaty July 10th 1861…for perpetual annuities…under Article 41 on the sum of $200.00 in the Treasury of the United States & which should have been invested for educational purposes to be paid the Treasurer of the Nation…10,000…for annual provision under Article 41 for wagon-makers, black-smiths, shops, iron steel & agricultural purposes from July 1st 1864 to June 30th 1865…5,420.00…". The military agreement of the treaty was Article 41. It called for the Indians to provide military support "to serve in the armies of the Confederacy for twelve months." Stand Watie, Col. Drew and Chief Jumper each led Indian units in the war under the principles of that Article with the part they played during the battle of Pea Ridge being their most recognized. The document continues, in small part: "…Choctaw and Chickasaw Treaty July 12th 1861 for permanent annuities…from July 1st 1864 to June 30th 1865 under Article 53…10,520.00…Cherokee Treaty Oct. 7th 1861 for interest…under Article 45 on $5000 of Cherokee Orphan fund invested by the United States and on stocks amounting to…of the United States and…not of this Confederacy…$893.68…Osage Treaty Oct. 2nd 1861 for annual purchase of clothing…during the year 1865…10,000…Recapitulation. On account of the Creeks, 40920.00…Choctaw and Chickasaws…Cherokees…Osages…Reserve Indians…262940.57…Seminole Treaty Aug. 1st 1861 for permanent annuity…under Article 38…25000.00…for annual provision for the support of the schools…to be applied and expended under the direction of the President by the agent of the Seminoles…3,000.00…for annual provision for Smith and Smith shops…to be paid to the Treasurer of the Nation and expended under the direction of the General Council…2,200.00…to meet the incidental expenses of the Public service within the Indian Tribes from…150,000…". According to the document, the Choctaw and Chickasaw amounts totaled $61,126.89 (the most expensive for the Confederate government) with the Creek's incurring the Confederacy's second largest expenditure at $40,920.00. A great financial document showing a direct link between the Confederacy and the Native Americans. Negligible attachment holes in upper left hand margin, else near fine.
