War-date Autograph Letter Signed, C.B. Shipp, 9th Mississippi Infantry, 4p. octavo, pencil, Tuckers Brigade, Hindman's Div., June 19, 1864, with cover bearing a “DUE 10” and Confederate newspaper clipping of a poem on the Death of Polk, it reads in part: "…Our corps moved to the left about 5 or 6 miles to support Genl. Hardee in case of an attack (which we were expecting) then we moved back past our old position within two miles of Marrietta...I think there will be some hard fighting here soon. We recd a letter from one of Martins old Texas regiments…There is heavy firing in Hardees corps this morning. He is on the left. Polk in the center. Hood on the right. Gen Polk was killed a few days since with a cannon ball, him Genl. Johnston, Hardee & Jackson, were in conversation with each other when he was struck…We here that Genl. Forrest has whipped the Federals good in North Miss…excitement there about the Yanks coming in there some are running off their Negroes & hiding their provisions. They may get down that far but it may be some time yet. Everybody is moving from Atlanta the cannonading can be heard very distinctively…" More. VG.
