War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Alexander G. Edwards, 1st Virginia Cavalry, taken POW at Berry’s Ferry, Virginia, and confined as a Rebel Spy at Fort McHenry, of which charges he was later acquitted. This letter is 3pp. octavo, Fort McHenry, April 8, 1864, and reads in part: “...You are right...about my not being exchanged. I am not in the Medical Department of the Army, which nine months imprisonment has taught me to regret. Oh, how beautiful the weather has been for the past few days; it seems a mockery to us who have only a few feet of sterile earth to tread upon. I sometimes almost wish there was no spring, but then I remember that there are those who are not hampered as I am, for instance yourself, to whom I present all that portion which was intended for me...” Fine condition.
