War-date Confederate soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Captain Edmund Cowan, 14th South Carolina Infantry, 4pp. octavo, pencil, Officer’s Hospital, No. 4, Richmond, Virginia, October 3, 1864, and reads in part: “..It was no doubt imprudent in me for sending for Sallie, yet I knew she was anxious to see me & I was rather low spirits at the time as my prospects still continued gloomy & it really looked like that there would be no change for the better soon. You haven’t the slightest Idea how much I have suffered with my leg, it would have been far better had my leg been taken off on the battlefield than to have had the suffering & pain I have endured to try to save it....” Fine condition. The 14th South Carolina was organized in July, 1861, and was engaged at Seven Day’s, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the Petersburg Seige, before surrendering with Lee at Appomattox.
