War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed “S.L. Niblack” who was President of the Florida, Atlantic, and Gulf Central Rail Road, 1-1/4pp. quarto, Lake City, Florida, June 2, 1864, addressed to the Confederate Florida Senator J.M. Baker in Richmond, Virginia and reads in part: “...Lieut Reuben H. Charles has been elected third lieut. in Capt. Hawkin’s Company reserve corps. Leiut. Chalres belongs to the 2d Fla. Battalion but at this time is exempt on account of wounds received having at this time six buck shot in his person, but will in a short time be able to discharge the duties of his office. According to the orders under which Genl. Anderson is authorized to receive members of this Corps, Lieut Chalres is not eligible to the office being between the age of 18 & 45. Lieut Charles has been through one campaign in Tennessee as 1st Lieutenant of Cavalry, has been in the service since 1861, was at one time discharged for disability but entered the service as soon as he was able...He has experience in the field as an officer & has served the country faithfully and will make an efficient officer in this Corps...” Fine condition. Reuben Charles served with the 1st Florida Cavalry and with the 2nd Florida Battalion of Infantry.
