War-date Confederate Autograph Letter Signed “M.A. Foster” 1pp. quarto, Athens, Georgia, May 1, 1864, sent to Governor Albert Gallatin Brown, who was Governor of Mississippi during the 1840’s and later a Confederate Senator , and reads in part: “...I concluded to follow the friendly suggestion of Mrs. Brown and have today written to the President. I asked him directly for an appointment to one of the military judgeships under the late law but added that if these appointments were filled, or for any other reason one of these could not be conferred upon me. I would ask an appointment as Assistant Adjt. Genl with the rank of major to be assigned to any duty for which I am deemed best fitted...” Fine condition.
