LEE, Robert E. (1807-1870). Beloved Confederate General and postwar President of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. Autograph Letter Signed “R. E. Lee,” Lexington Va., October 9, 1868, 1pp., to Mr. Edwin James. In full, “I have forgotten the year in which Mr. Charles Lee was born, also the date of the birth of Judge Bushrod Washington, I have no records to which I can refer. By reference to Dr. Thos: Miller of Washington City who married the 2nd daughter of Mr. Lee, you may probably learn the date of the births of both gentlemen.” Fine. Extravagantly framed in three-layer shadow box style, with a “Genealogy Chart of the Lees of Virginia”, an engraving of Lee and an informative plaque. The cloth mat has a blind embossed “Tree of Life,” stunning ! A 1992 Kenneth Lawrence certificate is on the reverse of the frame. This letter may have originated as a result of Lee’s effort to republish “Memoirs of the War in the Southern Department of the United States. New Edition with a Biography of the Author by Robert E. Lee,” 1869.
