George W. Snyder was an 1856 West Point honors graduate commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers. Arriving at Ft. Sumter on Sept. 21, 1860, Snyder was assigned assistant engineer and put in immediate charge of work involving the evacuation of Major Anderson's command from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter. After Sumter's surrender, he returned north to serve as engineer of the third division of the Army of Northeastern Virginia, participating in the First Battle of Bull Run. For gallant and meritorious services at Fort Sumter he was brevetted captain in the regular army and later major for similar services "in the Manassas campaign." While on duty near Washington he fell ill, possibly with typhoid fever, and died on the November 17, 1861. Fine war-date journal kept by Lieutenant Snyder, with detailed sketch of the position of the 1st Minnesota Regiment at 1st Manassas, denoting the points held by each company, as well as the placement of their Colonel, his staff, support regiments and battery. This journal also contains a small sketch of the vicinity around Middleburg, Virginia and various entries on stores and monies due him. Leather bound. Fine condition.
