ROWAN, Stephen Clegg (1808-1890) U.S. Navy admiral, veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War. Captain of the steam sloop Pawnee at the outbreak of the American Civil War, he made gallant attempts to relieve Fort Sumter and to burn the Norfolk Navy Yard. In the fall of 1861, he assisted in the capture of the forts at Hatteras Inlet; then, taking command of a flotilla in the North Carolina sounds, he cooperated in the capture of Roanoke Island in February 1862. Promoted to captain for gallantry, he then supported the capture of Elizabeth City, Edenton, and New Bern. During the summer of 1863, he commanded the broadside ironclad New Ironsides on blockade duty off Charleston, South Carolina and the following August assumed command of Federal forces in the North Carolina sounds. War-date Naval extract on blockade runners including the CSS Oreto, 1pp. quarto, “Respectfully forwarded to Senior Officer Blockade of Beaufort S.C. Rowan Cm. U.S. Navy Newbern N. Carolina” and reads in small part: “...The Oreto [rebel gunboat] took her departure from this port on Saturday afternoon last. The pilot who took her out says she will not return, but go direct to Bermuda...The bark Mary...is clearing to-day. She will attempt to run the blockade...” followed by descriptions of other blockade runners and other information furnished by the U.S. Consul at Halifax. Fine condition.
