KEARNY, Philip (1815-1862) Union Major General who served in Napoleon III's guard, lost an arm during the Mexican War, and led with distinction in the Peninsula Campaign. He was killed at Chantilly. A war-date Union general's battlefield orders all in the hand of Philip Kearny, 1p. oblong 8vo., "Hd. Qrs., 3rd Div., 3rd Corps., [Harrison Landing, Va.], July 7, 1862," in full: "General Robinson will furnish instantly 200 workmen to report to Gen'l. Birney for two hours work this day…". Signed "Kearny, Br. Gn. Comd. Div, 7 July 5 p. m.". At the time this order was written McClellan's Army of the Potomac were digging in to defend themselves at Harrison Landing after their terrible trashing during the Seven Days Campaign. VG
