War-date Union soldier’s letter archive of eight letters by Warren McWilliams who enlisted in the 123rd Pennsylvania Infantry in August 1862 and died of disease in November of that year, these letters are all multi-page, and read in part: “...[9/15/1862]We have been on the march since last Friday...we stop on the ground that the rebels occupied last friday as they destroyed the rail road brdige...we had a hard time of it. We marched 23 miles this day on little rations...[9/16/62]I have been out to see the old rebel camp. It was on the field where Burnside and Jackson had the fight . The white men was all boared but there 13 darkies lying on the field that is not board they lay there like dead animals...we are going in that direction tomorrow to reinforce McClellan. We will have a chance to try them...we saw three hundred rebel prisoners this evening and they are the most degraded looking men that ever met with. the other day 4 of the men of our co. went to the hospital...[10/27/62] there is 5 of us here in one place on picket there is William Watson, James Watson, John H. Davis, Jack Wilson and the Hon. Warren McWilliams...The Reb prisoners are nearly freezing here, they cannot stand the cold. Some of the Reb prisoners were paroled and sent home...[10/29/62]the Reb prisoners that we had here were paroled and sent home, but a great many of them died here. There was about 125 died...most of them were from Mississippi...” More. Most very good. (11 items)
