War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by John W Parker 45th Illinois, 4pp. octavo, Camp at Jackson, Tennessee, June 30, 1862, with transmittal cover, it reads in part: “...We have great fun with the niggers out here, they come around and dance for us and sing songs. We got 2000 Secesh uniforms and knapsacks and canteens, 100 bbls of molasses, 150 hhd of sugar, and lots of old shot guns and rifles which they had hid. They were glad to see us go away but they were not so glad to see us return...There is a regular train runs here now...” Fine condition....plus; ALS by John Parker, 45th Ills., 2pp. quarto, August 21, 1862, in part: “... we are now guarding the RR between Toons Station and Jackson...We are allowed a negro cook to each company, to do all the work and cooking we have in our company....We were called up about 2 oclock last night by heavy firing of the pickets. We were soon in line and ready for action but the alarm was false for they only fired at a dog. The men were of the 11th Iowa regt and did not know any better. There were no lives lost, not even the dog...I sleep in the tent with the lieutenant, he is the only officer with the company now for Lieut. Budlong is Assistant Adjutant General and the Capt is a member of the Board of Trade in Jackson...” Fine condition. (3 items)
