A good war-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Lt. Levi H. Kinney, Co. D, 85th New York Vols., "Camp Warren, Feb. 10, 62", in part: "…the booming of heavy guns comes up the river…an action is now being fought down in the vicinity of the Rebel Blockade…the arrest of Gen. Stone has caused an intense excitement…in the army of the Potomac…he would have been torn in pieces by the soldiers had not the authorities have guard & conveyed him speedily away. Who shall we trust? When is the army to be rided of Rebels? When will the Government be conducted solely by loyal citizens?…all we want for is a suitable condition of the roads over which to transport the baggage and heavy artillery…on Meridian Hill…we often see the melancholy escort , headed by mournful music & muffled drums, accompanying the [?] of some poor fellow to its final resting place…one of our regiment has just passed away…his body now lies in the gloomy 'Dead tent' with a solitary sentinal to guard it till tomorrow when it will be embalmed & returned to his Father's home…another was shot by a sentinal…while disregarding the Sentry's challenge and died yesterday…not any one of my men has ever been punished yet…they are sober, earnest fellows…we did expect to go with the 'Burnside Expedition' but were disappointed & the New Jersey 9th went in our stead…the Steuben Rangers have crossed the River. The firing down the river increases…". VG.
