War-date Manuscript Document Signed, 1p. oblong folio, Headquarters 54 Regt. Penna. Vols, Sir Johns Run, Virginia, November 1, 1862, and reads: " I do solemnly swear that I will bear true Allegiance to the United States of America and that I will serve them honestly and faith full against all their enemies or opposers whatsoever, that I will in no wise aid, assist, or comfort the Rebels by giving them information or intelligence, that I will not take up or use arms against the Government of the United States, and that I will aid an assist the Officers thereof to the full extent of my power, in enforcing the Laws, and in crushing out the Rebellion. The penalty of the violation of his oath being Death. So help me God...." Signed by Charles Gill, Edmund Leith, James Leith, Thos. Riley, Robert Leith, and Franklin Gill of Hampshire County, Virginia and by John Adams of Frederic County, Virginia. VG. West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions, breaking away from Virginia during the American Civil War. The new state was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by seceding from a Confederate state, and was one of only two states formed during the American Civil War (the other one being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).
