War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Leander Harris, 4th New Hampshire Infantry, 3pp. quarto, Beaufort, South Carolina, January 2, 1862, and reads in part: “...Yesterday was a holiday in camp, and I played ball so much that today I am so lame that I can hardly get around...Why don’t my little Annie write to me...I have not caught that little nigger for her yet, but there are plenty of them running about here, as black as mud and twice as dirty. I can get her one any time. I should like to have them see some of the little imps or any of the rest of you, either. They are the most carnigcal looking little devils that I ever saw. They don’t appear anymore like children than so many pigs would, and their resemblance to me to humanity amuses me just as it does to look at monkeys. But the old ones are the most disgusting animals that I have ever seen. You see I am not a negro worshipper, though just as much of an abolitionist as ever....” Fine condition.
