War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Charles S. Ramsay, 44th Ohio Infantry, 6pp. octavo, Camp Meadow Bluff, Virginia, August 10, 1862, with cover addressed to his wife and franked by Adjutant John Gilmer Telford, it reads in part: “...Co. I came in from their scout...they did not meet any Rebels. They brought in the body of Quartermaster Klingfelter who died that morning at nine o’clock. He was buried Friday morning with honors of war. I did the firing over the grave. Following the coffin in the procession to the grave came his horse, the one he always rode. It was saddled and bridled with Jerry’s boots stuck in the stirups. The whole regiment attended his funeral. He will be greatly missed by us all. He was always in good humor and attended to his business and endeavored to keep a good supply of everything on hand. it will be hard to find a person to fill his place....There is rumors in camp of a fight at Gordonsville between Pope’s command and the Rebels. Have not heard of the result or whether there was any fight at all. Have they commenced drafting in Ohio or will it be necessary. I should like very much to hear of Ohio raising her quota without resorting to a draft...” Fine condition.
