War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Charles H. Hewitt, 7th Connecticut Infantry, 4pp. octavo, Camp Hitchcock, Hilton Head, South Carolina, August 8, 1862, and reads in part: “...we have to work on the entrenchments half a day every other day and drill 2-1/2 hours a day...We have soft bread and fresh meat. We have to have it boiled. They won’t let us have it fried. The doc says it ain’t healthy. The boys don’t like it so well though. The rebels are getting on Defuskie and Bulls Island in some force. We was ordered north but Hunter would not let us go for fear they would attack the place. They won’t get inside of the entrenchments if they do, not much damage...Daniel Coe, our orderly sergeant has been promoted to 2nd Lt. Lt. Dempsey [WIA at James Island - KIA at Olustee, Florida] is here but he has not got well of his wound yet...” Fine condition.
