A great war-date Union home front letter, 2pp., 8vo., written by the sister of Pvt. Truman M. Hunter, Co. K, 2nd Vermont Vols. who was KIA Savage Station, Va., on June 29, 1862. She writes, in part: "…we have been in hopes of hearing from Truman or his whereabouts but we have not heard anything yet. we do not know whether he is a prisoner or not. there were fifteen lost the same time he was. They have all returned but two…one of the two is my Brother…we had just heard of Dames death. we thought [this] was all we could bear but the next night we received the intelligence that Truman was lost. My mother was taken sick the next day or crazy. She remained so all day and part of the next day. She did not recover wholly for a week. Father…has gone to Middlebury to carry Cousin Charles out. He…has enlisted. The company is organized today. Last Wednesday there was sixteen enlisted from our little town. There has about forty gone in all. There are more ready to go as soon as they are called…the people…are holding war meetings…Truman was missing the 29th of June 1862. The battle was in the night and the woods…we do not know whether he was killed or taken prisoner…we hope he was taken prisoner…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
