War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Lionel Stanley, 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry, 4pp. octavo, on McCLELLAN, The Napoleon of America” lettersheet, Camp California, February 15, 1862, and reads in part: “...This morning, five months, I first saw Camp Curtin and what I have seen since that time would fill a volume were it condensed into one work. Still I am alive and can say what but few in the regiment can that for these five months I have not yet missed duty. We have not yet had the fun of making the rebels run but all we await is the command as soon as that is given the bloody 53rd will be off to Charleston a little while to stay. On Tuesday the paddies of the 69th NY had a grand wake when they got pretty well stewed and about half after eight in the evening the dummers were sent out to beat the drummers call but instead of it they beat the long roll. When we heard it up we jumped and formed in line of battle in most no time but to our disappointment we found out the mistake before we got off. I suppose some of our friends have seen fighting lately for the Cameron Dragoons have been to Fairfax Court House where they took a great many prisoners; in this regiment Brown’s company is and some too have been in the fight at Roanoke Island where we came near taking Old Wise of John Brown notoriety...My opinion is that Burnside on the ocean and Gen. Halleck, Butler and others on land will draw the troops from Manassas and the forts along the Potomac as quick as this is done we will pitch in and garrison the evacuated strongholds. The rebels were mistakened when they bestowed all their labor on Manassas for it will be taken without a battle...” Fine condition.
