BABCOCK, Willoughby (1832-1864) Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a 1st Lieutenant in the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to Captain, he was initially assigned to the 64th New York Volunteer Infantry, but was never mustered in at that rank. However, he eventually became the Lieutenant Colonel of the 75th New York Volunteer Infantry after spending some time as the Acting Assistant Inspector General for the Department of the Gulf's Cavalry Division. He was mortally wounded at the 3rd Battle of Winchester, Virginia on September 19, 1864. He lingered until October 6, when he died. He was posthumously brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers (backdated to September 19, the date of his wounding) for "conspicuous gallantry at Winchester, Va.". War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed “Willoughby Babcock Major 75th N.Y. Vols.” 1pp. quarto, Head Quarters 75th NY Vols, U.S. Barracks, New Orleans, Louisiana, September 13, 1862, addressed to Captain C.E. Bainbridge, and reads in part: “... I have to ask if you have any furniture at your disposal which you can turn over to needy officers for temporary use in quarters. The field and staff officers of this Regt. mess in the rooms occupied by myself as quarters & we need a table and a few chairs very much, as we have neither, and do not know where to find them except by purchase...” Fine condition.
