War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by George R. Palmer, 138th Pennsylvania Infantry, 4pp. octavo, on fine “YOUNG AMERICA OFF FOR THE WAR” stationary, Camp Sumwalt, October 8, 1862, and reads in part: “...The flag which was presented to Capt on the morning we left...was presented to the Regt yesterday. It was a beautiful silk flag with its golden stars, it was made up by the Ladies of Norristown it is said to have cost 75 dollars.. There was a stand, built out in a 15 acre field under an apple tree. There was our Regt. and the New York Regt and the Flying Artillery with their 6 guns, 6 horses to each gun. It was a nice sight. Our captain made the first speech, it was a very good one...you ought to have seen us soldiers form into line, and to hear cheering...Our boys are all well but the cook Amos Mullen he is sick...there is 7 in our tent, Sam Bright, Amos Mullen [died 10/25/62], B. Kenderdine [WIA Cedar Creek], Charles Magee [WIA Cedar Creek],W.P. Iredell [died 7/23/63], E. Lewis [WIA Mine Run], and myself...Our lieutenants are sick, Jon Iredell [WIA Cold Harbor, Winchester, Petersburg] has got the intermitten fever and Bertolett is sick in Baltimore very bad...” Very good condition.
