A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Alonzo J. Sergeant, Co. D, 4th New Hampshire Vols., Beaufort, S. C., Dec. 10, 1862, in part: "…our regt went out on picket. We go out 9 miles and stay 10 days. Next to main land a river parts us from the rebels…the river is 1 mile wide. We can see the rebs plain as day…thare is a cause way built out from each side to the middle of the channel…we have rifle pits dug to lay in…we often talk acrost to the rebs. We can git baiter news from them then we can from our mails…". Unfortunately, Sergeant was KIA during the battle of New Market Heights, Va. on Sept. 29, 1864. VG
