McCOOK, Daniel (1798-1863) Sending 10 sons into the Union army -three of whom were killed - Daniel McCook himself gave his life in the attempt to capture John Hunt Morgan during his raid north of the Ohio River. Considered too old for active field duty, the native Pennsylvanian and Illinois resident was commissioned as an additional paymaster of volunteers on March 24, 1862. The next year he was mortally wounded on July 19 near Buffington Island, Ohio, in an attempt to stop Morgan. He died two days later. His brother and five nephews also served in the Union army and Navy. Nice partly-printed Document Signed, “Daniel McCook” 1pp. octavo, March 18, 1841, being a subpoena for William Rider of Ohio. Fine condition.
