War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Benjamin F. Stalder, 63rd Ohio Infantry and later 1st Michigan Light Artillery, 2pp. folio, July 4, 1862, Mississippi, and reads in small part: “...last night I went and got a pint of whiskey and now I feel as if there was a war for I am as tight as you generally see me. It only cost me about three dollars to get enough to make me tight but I would rather be where I was last fourth altho there is a good deal of fun here. Me and Elick Harper is taking on a little of what killed watch. It is hotter than Hell...one year ago today I was in Nelsonville with you girls and now I roam the Mississippi Valley a hunting the damn Rebels that raised their arms against the Union. I don’t think that you need fret about Ben for he is alright...this Regiment has the best name of anyone that every came from Ohio and is the smallest one there is not over 15 tent men in our company. Now when we was in Chillicothe there was one hundred and 35 that was fit for duty and it beats hell what has become of them. There is not one of them got killed and only five of them died and the rest has runoff and is at the hospital playing off for a discharge...” More. Good condition.
