War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Philemon Heath, 6th New York Heavy Artillery, 4pp. octavo, on “For the Union” patriotic lettersheet, Camp Franklin, near Alexandria, January 26, 1862, and reads in part: “...we have had a hard time for the last two weeks, the mud has been knee deep and now it has turned around and snowed 2 inches and it hails and rains and freezes as fast as it comes. John Fredenburgh and I was on guard night before last we had a hard one but they have got sentry boxes now...We are going to Fairfax as soon as the mud dries up so that the artillery can move but I do not know whether it is so or not...” Very good condition.
