War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Capt. Henry A Wiley, Company B, 104th New York Infantry, 4pp. octavo, pencil, Near White Church, May 13, 1863, and reads in part: “...We are some three miles nearer to White Oaks Church than our old camp...The Sixth Corps lays about one mile from us what there is left of them. Some of the 27 NY Officers were over here to see us...they belong to the 6 Corp and suffered severely in the recent battle. Our regt is in a bad state. Captains Gault, Haver & Spencer have all three been dismissed the service sentenced by a court martial and have gone home. Col. Prey & four line officers are now under arrest and the Lord only knows when or where it will stop...Captain Sellick and Stull are under arrest for falling out and being absent without leave five or six days when the Regt were on the march and expecting to meet the enemy. It is no honor to belong to this Regt. and if I can transfer to some other regiment I will do so...The 30 day of April our Brigade were formed in a hollow square and appropriate services held in observance of the President’s proclamation. We had but just finished the exercises and some rousing Cheers were made for Joe Hooker and the President when the Rebels opened several batteries on us and many of their shells done terrible execution falling and exploding just behind us in another brigade....one shell killed a Capt and Lieut...” Very good condition.
