War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Capt. Henry A Wiley, Company B, 104th New York Infantry, 4pp. octavo, Near White Oak Church, May 15, 1863, and reads in part: “...We have been expecting a raid through here by some of the Rebel cavalry. This morning we were called up and into line, everything in readiness to break camp, baggage all loaded anything but striking tents...Our Regt went on picket this morning taking most all the men in this Regt able for duty. I am quite well now and shall go on duty tomorrow. We found tough time of it on the last march and during the battles, although not in the thickets of the fight. The boys are feeling remarkably well however and are redy for anything that may turn up. A good many troops are leaving their term of service having expired and they are not willing to reenlist at present...There seems to be no doubt but that Stonewall Jackson received a mortal wound during the last battle. It will be a heavy blow to the Rebels...But Joe Hooker will not be caught napping at anyrate. I have the utmost confidence in his ability to handle this army and I believe that will make it count anytime. What a daring raid on cavalry under Stoneman accomplished, going almost into the city of Richmond...” Near fine condition.
