War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Captain Henry A Wiley, Company B, 104th New York Infantry, 4pp. quarto, Near Belle Plain, Virginia, February 4, 1863, and reads in part: “...I am afraid what will happen to me for being absent at Washington and reporting to Dr. Clymer. I have heard nothing more from them but am expecting every day to be notified of my dismissal from the service dishonorably which will be terrible. The Col and Qr Master tell me not to worry myself about the matter that if it does take place they will do everything in their power to have me reinstated...I feel worse on account of our folks than my own account, but to think that our folks will have to suffere from it is more than I can bear. How our enemies will exhault over it but now I cannot help it...Day before yesterday I had command of all the picket guard from our Brigade which was some 300 men. I being senior officer placed me in command of the whole. I had one captain and from and four lieutenants to assist me. We only had to stay out 24 hours when we were relieved by Gen. Taylor’s Brigade, and they will be relieved in 24 hours by Col. Lyle’s Brigade and next day we will have to relieve them...I have just learned that Gov. Morgan has been nominated for US Senate by the Republicans and will of course be elected. That is good I believe he will make a first class senator...Sergt. Peabody and Peter Fuller deserted when they were on that last march and have been arrested and sent to the regiment, where they will be tried for desertion and will probably get a pretty hard sentence. Three men from my company have deserted but I have not heard anything from them since, so it is possible that they have succeeded in getting through...” Fine condition.
