War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Capt. Henry A Wiley, Company B, 104th New York Infantry, 4pp. quarto, Near Belle Plain, Virginia, April 20, 1863, and reads in part: “...Our whole regiment went out on picket duty this morning taking with them their tents and everything so that should we receive marching orders before they return that they would not have to return to camp but could come on and overtake the Division while marching...Our Regt is in a sad state and the Lord only knows what will become of us. Three Captains are now under arrest for positively refusing to obey the order of the Col and the prospect is that others who are equally to blame will be arrested and should the charges be proved will dismiss them from the service dishonorably and in fact the whole Regt is disgraced beyond redemption. We have heard today...from Suffolk to the effect that our whole force has been captured by the Rebels and Gen. Cocoran killed. It needs confirmation...If such is the case and our troops have been captured then of course the Rebels will move all their force to Frederickburg to reinforce Gen. Lee on the other side...” Very good condition.
