War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Captain Henry A. Wiley, Company B, 104th New York Infantry, 4pp. octavo, Near White Oak Church, Virginia, May 20, 1863, and reads in part: “...I have fully recovered from the effects of the late eight day campaign and have resumed the ordinary duties of my command....I am not willing to admit that we were defeated at Chancellorsville in the late campaign. Hookers falling back across the Rapphannock is no evidence of such an event. It was no doubt a military necessity to fall back, the river was rising very rapidly owing to the very hard rain which had been falling during the last two days before we recrossed and there was great danger that the pontoon might be carried away which would cut off our supplies and communication. That Gen. Lee was severely punished and was willing that Hooker should fall back is evident from his not following him up and attacked his rear guard. In the loss of Officers the rebels have suffered much more than we have according to their own accounts in the Richmond paper. I yet have confidence in Hooker and believe that when he moves again that victory will crown his efforts against the miserable traitor...” Near fine condition.
