LEE, Samuel Phillips(1812-1897)) was a Rear Admiral of the United States Navy. He commanded the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron from 4 September 1862 to 12 October 1864. His flagship was Philadelphia. A rare war-date Union rear admiral's letter, 1p. 4to., signed by Rear Admiral SAMUEL P. LEE (1812-1897), as Commander of the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron on USS Minnesota blue printed stationery, "Off Newport News, Va., June 2, 1863", to Gregory, in part: "After having taken on board your provisions and a 32 pdr…for the 'Crusader' which you will get from Lt. Comdr [Dawson] Phenix, ass't Inspector of Ordnance at Fortress Monroe. You will proceed to Yorktown with the 'Western World'…and report to Lt. Commander J. H. Gillis for duty…". Fine
