A great war-date manuscript soldier's petition, 3pp folio, issued by the non commissioned officers and private of Company B, 19th Iowa Vols., Forsyth, Mo., April 1, 1863 written to Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood by 1st Sergeant Albert M. Roth [died of disease, Aug. 16, 1863, Memphis], reading, in small part: "We the non-commissioned officers and privates of Capt. Harry Jordan's company 'B' 19th Regt. Iowa Vols…having learned of the resignation of Col. Crabb…[recommend] Capt. Jordan…for the office of major…most of us were personally acquainted with him before we came into the service and know him to be a prompt, energetic business man and of temperate habits. We elected him as captain and he has disappointed us, but has…engaged in…indefatigable efforts to, learn his duties…we…place him second to no officer in the 19th Regt. since we lost our noble Lt. Col. McFarland at the battle of Prairie Grove…it is but justice to a noble officer…that we do him this act of justice while in his absence…". The petition is then signed in double columns by over 60 of the company's men including Sgt. Henry C. Frisby (KIA at the battle of Atchafalaya, La., on Sept. 29, 1863), Pvt. George Major (KIA Spanish Fort, Al., March 27, 1865) and Isaac Rumer (WIA Atchafalaya, La.) to name a few. As for Jordan he would not become major until March 1864 and then lieutenant colonel before the regiment was discharged from service. Near fine
