Group of three war-date Union soldier letters by Edward Husted, 123rd Ohio Vols, POW at Winchester, 12pp total, octavo, with three covers one with cds removed, they read in small part: “...[12/27/1863] Nothing out of the usual have occurred here in camp on Christmas, but down town the people acted as if the Fourth of July had just got here. They were firing skyrockets and firecrackers at a great rate, and at night the Union League gave a ball. I will just say here that I did not attend...[2/21/64]Fred was in here a little while ago and showed me an article in the Toledo Blade written from Norwalk and signed by “Our of the People” which article was devoted to running down the performances given by the Alert Club. I can see the sign of the ‘Golden Mortar’ sticking out, and think it an article worthy of the author...It made my ‘mad’ raise to read the piece, and to think that the strife between the different societies had become so great that they published articles running each other down....In going to and coming from Winchester we passed the scene of the fight on Monday morning, the 15th of last June [1863] and saw where the hogs had rooted up the bodies of our slain on that memorable morning. Some of our boys visited the cemetery and saw where the Orderly Frith and others of our men who died of their wounds were buried...We hear by the papers that a Captain and Lieutenant of Company ‘H’ of our regiment have arrived at Fortress Monroe, having escaped from Libby Prison. We are in hopes that more of our officers have escaped and will come into our lines before long...[2/23/64] Yesterday [Washington’s Birthday] was pretty generally observed by the soldier boys in town and there were many who felt pretty well all day, from the effects of drinking something stronger than water. Orders were issued from Headquarters, stating that no unnecessary labor should be performed but the day strictly observed. A national salute was fired by one of the batteries during the day and in the evening there was a display of fireworks...” More. Fine condition.
