A good Union home front petition, 1p. folio, signed by numerous public officials of [Ringgold County, Iowa, ca. 1863] to Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood recommending 1st Sgt. Peter James, 4th Iowa Infantry to higher position, in small part: "…the undersigned would respectfully state that Peter O. James of Company G forth Iowa Infantry is a young man (1st sergeant in said company) of good education, good habits…and undoubted patriotism and Union sentiments…worthy of a higher situation then he now holds. We would therefore ask that he may receive a commission commensurate with his abilities and patriotism…". James was WIA at the battle of Chickasaw Bayou, Miss., Dec. 29, 1862 and unfortunately was not promoted beyond his present rank of 1st sergeant. Signers include Sheriff George Woodbury, a certain V. Wainwright as county superintendent and former Lieut. Joseph S. Wamer, Co. D, 4th Iowa. Near fine
