A good Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by a New York soldier on the battle of Jackson, Miss. and of the scenes surrounding fields after the fight, in part: "…those on the left getting near enough to receive and return several volleys. Our boys creeping close to the ground. Just then a brisk shower stopped operations…it was found the rebs were ditto so we moved on into town, tore up the railroad, burnt the station house and public stores…we brought along…considerable corn & sugar etc…here I stopped to eat grub [and] wash my blouse that fell into the mud yesterday and look at the battery that was at work knocking the trussle work and abotments that support the railroad bridge across the Pearl…[July 22]…I concluded to look around town…now a word or so of Jackson as it was and Jackson as it is…one forth of the buildings taken out…imagine 1 /4 of the stores etc a heap of charred ruins and the most…fallen with doors and windows broken open and such rooms as had been occupied by families despoiled of nearly all their affects with now & then a table, bedstead or the like…and 1/2 of the rest untenanted their walls either shattered by shot and shell or violently entered by the help of an ax edge…25th Big Black 15 miles from Vicksburg…a hundred acres is not a very large field…I entered one 100 rods…but had to go…into the field…to where it was not stripped yet I had not gained the [?] of the field so you see if we 'Yanks' would only let their mules and niggars alone they could get the…articles of food there…". Incomplete with original stamped patriotic transmittal cover. VG
