War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by John W Parker 45th Illinois, 3pp. quarto, Camp of the 45th Regt IVI, Memphis, Tennessee, February 6, 1863, with transmittal cover, it reads in part: “...We are still in Memphis...I was down to the city with Gustaves Martin [died at Vicksburg 9/28/63] and had all the fresh oysters we could eat...when I get home I want to have a woman spoken for. The reason is this when all the boys get home from the war, thre will be such a rush for wives that I am afraid I will not stand any chance so I want to speak before hand and make sure. I am not afraid of any of the boys but those in the Brave and Galent 1st. The heroes of Winnebago Co. that were not enlisted from the grog shops & corner of the streets but from the farms and workshops. May we be proud of our Winnebago Conscripts. No doubt they are the best that ever entered the field. They can beat us for the 45th never had to punish a man for running yet but they had to force them away from danger...” Fine condition.
