War-date Autograph Document Signed, "E. M. Woodward" Adjt. 2nd Regt. P.R. V. C., 3p. folio, titled "The Names of the Enlisted Men of the Second Regt. Infantry P.R.V.C. who refused to do Picket duty Feb. 14th 1863", followed by a list of 250+ names with rank and company designated. Verso has Autograph Note Signed, "Wm McCandless" dated Feby 15, 1863, and reads "List of insubordinate non com. officers and men of Second Regt. Pa. Res. who refused to do picket duty when ordered..." Fine. Three of the men listed were KIA at Gettysburg. 1st Lt. Evan M. Woodward, 2nd Pennsylvania Reserves, while at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862, with twenty men captured the Nineteenth Georgia regiment and he personally captured their colors and color bearer. The 19th Ga. numbered over 300 men at the time of their capture. For his actions Woodward received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Colonel William McCandless, 31st Pennsylvania Infantry, WIA at 2nd Bull Run and at the Wilderness, who as Colonel at the battle of Gettysburg participated in a brilliant charge in which many prisoners and the colors of the 15th Infantry were captured. On July 21, 1864, he was commissioned brigadier-general of volunteers, but declined the proffered honor and gave his attention to peaceful pursuits.
