War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Eugene De Romvelle, 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, who enlisted as sergeant but was twice reduced in rank mustering out as a private, 4pp. octavo, February 2, 1863, Fort Ward, Virginia, with cover addressed to his sister in Massachusetts, in part: “...the 34th Mass are in the same brigade with my battrey and in that Regt. I have a good many acquaintances from Westfield. I believe when I last wrote you I was just recovering from a fever. Well as soon as I got well enough to mount a horse, I was started for the front. I arrived and took command of my piece, just in time to get into seven day’s of about the toughest times that were ever witnessed...I have been in a few brushes since and came out all safe and sound except a slight scratch or graze under my left eye from a bullet of sharpshooter. He was a pretty good marksman but missed his game for once. The chap picked off several from my piece...” Fine condition.
