War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by John W. Pitridge, 5th Vermont Infantry, WIA & POW at Savage Station, 3pp. octavo, January 12, 1863, Camp near Bell Plain, Virginia, and reads in part: “...Was glad to hear you had a ball New Years night...I had some of a time here anyway as good as could be expected to for a soldier all we had to cheer us on was to think of home or some other place up north. But all in vain for there is no chance for us here to have a good time...send me a box of things...I want 2 shirts woolen ones too red or blue and a can of whiskey...have the whiskey can sealed up with sealing wax and direct the box to Captain W.B. Roberson Company H 5 VT Regt. and on an end just put J.W. P. on it so I can tell if it is mine...” Fine condition.
