War-date Autograph Letter Signed, “Julius Varney” 42nd Massachusetts Infantry, 4pp. folio, pencil, Camp at Carrollton, January 18, 1863, and reads in part: “...I have just been reading in the Worcester Spy today about our voyage in the Charles. Osgoo, we did have a tough one...you get the paper and read it and then you can tell something about our hardships, get the paper that was printed the 4th day of January...in New Orleans...there is peddlers all over the ground and everything else. Niggers are plenty enough here, I can tell you and they are niggers too. Blacker than the Devil and homelier too. They go around here to sell things and it is ‘Masser do you want to buy Oranges’...we have got officers that is meaner than ever the Devil ever was...they dont care a darn about anyone but themselves and their whiskey. Martin Goram was drunk all through the whole voyage coming out here he didnt know his head from his heels half of the time...” More. About VG.
