War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Horatio D. Sturtevant, Co. A 46th Massachusetts Vols, 6pp. octavo, pencil, New Berne, February 26, 1863, and reads in part: “...I get from 1 to 5 letters from every mail...Our camp life is about the same every day and there is a monotony about it that is only varied by drills & evenings by conversations, playing Euchre or dominoes & singing...Gen Foster had a review of about 18000 or 20,000 troops including infantry, artillery, & cavalry. It was a sight...Our Brigade is the 2nd and we took the second place. We formed in line of battle , the 25th Mass in front ours next (the 46th) 2 in the rear the 5th Mass. The 27th (the remaining regiment of the Brigade) is off on picket. The artillery came next in order to the infantry & in order next came the cavalry. The Brigadier Generals & staff were in front of their respective brigades & the Cols & field officer in front of their respective regiments. The regiment came to the rear open order. I saw the Major General Foster come in sight. The battery opened with a salute of 13 guns and the General with staff rode to the 1st Brigade & they presented arms & the Gen. rode in front & in the rear of each regiment in the Brigade & then came to ours & we had to be reviewed in the same way. So on thro’ the entire division. This being finished the regiments broke into companies & march (the 1st Brigade in front) to the position of Gen. Foster & past him in review...It was a glorious sight...” VG.
